ABOUT US

Ask yourself: how many resources does it take to deliver quality counselling on a medication?

THE SEARCH

Throughout our studies in pharmacy school as well as our time practicing in community pharmacy, we've spent an untold amount of time scouring half a dozen resources attempting to find bits of information necessary to do just that. This is a tedious and also costly endeavor to provide the level of medication counselling we felt our patients should receive. This lead to compiling our own document - the first index page of the original counselling document  (now considered a VERY rough draft) is seen on the right here. Since then, we've gone through many reiterations to create the most efficient medication counselling resource which continues to be used and updated to this day.

NOT JUST ANOTHER DRUG INFORMATION REFERENCE

With the use of a PDF-searching app, icons and colour-coding, we found one could counsel on an unfamiliar medication within seconds of glancing at this document. We also found we were able to more easily remember key counselling pearls later when this came up again.

In contrast, other resources require reading wordy paragraphs, skimming past irrelevant and redundant information like cost, dosage forms, and strengths, or interpreting large tables. There was clearly a disconnect between what we know is already available to pharmacists through their pharmacy management system (Kroll, etc) and what points should be mentioned to patients.

This also made us realize prescribers could benefit from this as well: sometimes patients don’t have good rapport with their pharmacist or rarely get more than a minute of time with them, and thus don’t always receive quality medication counselling.
